Large Abstract Oil Painting Commission in Ballymoney – From Blank Canvas to Statement Artwork

There’s nothing quite like creating a large-scale abstract painting that completely transforms a space and this recent commission in Ballymoney was a perfect example of that.

At the start of the year, I began work on a 7ft x 4ft abstract oil painting for two wonderful clients, documenting the entire journey from a blank canvas to the finished piece.

Building the Canvas from Scratch

This project started back in January with the construction of a custom canvas frame. For a painting of this size, everything has to be built by hand to ensure strength, durability, and a flawless finish.

I carefully stretched high-quality Irish linen over the frame before priming the surface, creating the perfect foundation for the layers of oil paint to come.

Bringing the Painting to Life

Once the canvas was ready, the creative process truly began.

Using vibrant oil paints, I built up the artwork layer by layer, allowing colours and textures to develop naturally. To add depth and movement, I incorporated 3D modelling paste, giving the painting a rich, tactile surface that changes beautifully as light moves across it.

This combination of colour, texture, and scale is what makes abstract art commissions so powerful, they don’t just sit on a wall, they become part of the room.

A Bespoke Finish to Match the Interior

To complete the piece, I hand-crafted a natural wood frame, carefully stained to match the client’s interior design and complement their newly finished hall and stairwell.

This attention to detail ensures the artwork doesn’t just stand out, it fits perfectly within the space, enhancing the overall look and feel of the home.
