Renowned Belfast Artist and Ulster University Graduate Unveils Unique Campus-Inspired Art Collection
Belfast, Northern Ireland – June 2025 – Acclaimed artist and Ulster University graduate Stephen Whalley has partnered with the University’s Alumni Relations team to create a striking new collection of oil paintings celebrating the beauty and identity of Ulster University’s three campuses.
The East Belfast-based artist, who graduated with a degree in Design in 2000, approached the University in late 2024 with a creative concept: to produce a trio of handcrafted oil paintings capturing the architecture and essence of the Belfast, Coleraine, and Derry/ Londonderry campuses. The result is a powerful visual tribute to the institution that shaped his artistic journey — now transformed into a keepsake collection for future generations of graduates.
Whalley’s 30" x 40" original paintings were developed over several months from his studio, each one celebrating the unique character of the University’s locations: the dynamic new Belfast campus at York Street, the riverside setting of Coleraine, and the iconic architecture of Derry/ Londonderry.
Working closely with Alumni Relations Managers Kathy Morrow and Nicola Beattie, Stephen has now produced a series of high-quality handcrafted prints based on his original works — a lasting memento for Ulster University graduates worldwide.
“Stephen's talent and professionalism throughout this exciting project have been nothing short of inspiring,” said Kathy Morrow. “His vision, attention to detail, and creative excellence showcase the kind of success our alumni can achieve. He is a fantastic ambassador for Ulster University.”
With a global following and over 18 years of success selling his artistic products internationally, Stephen has expanded his talents in recent years to include live painting performances at gala events and corporate fundraisers, helping raise money for charitable causes. Notably, one of his live works was purchased by U2’s lead guitarist The Edge at an event in Belfast.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Stephen said:
“It was a real honour to return to the University that helped shape my career. I loved working on these three unique campus paintings — each one capturing a different architectural moment in time. I hope graduates take pride in displaying them and remembering their own university journey. With dedication and persistence, creativity really can become a lifelong career.”
